After weeks of state parks — beautiful, quiet, and trail-filled as they were — we were ready for a different kind of stop. Bella Terra of Gulf Shores is an upscale Class A motorhome resort in southern Alabama, and we chose it deliberately: we needed to receive mail and packages, catch up on bills and phone calls, and give Michael’s still-healing ribs and wrist a few days without a hiking agenda. It also has a pool and spa, which after the state park circuit felt like pure luxury.

The Resort

Bella Terra is genuinely upscale — this isn’t a standard RV park with a clubhouse tacked on. The 6,000-square-foot clubhouse has a private movie theater, a well-equipped fitness center, and wide views over the lake. Our site had a large paved pad (always appreciated for keeping sand and gravel out of the motorhome), reliable WiFi, and a direct lake view. The pool and spa were excellent and finally got used. The resort has two fenced dog areas, so Jake got to stretch his legs properly for the first time in a while without being on-leash.
Southern Alabama is boating country. Bella Terra sits five minutes from the Intracoastal Waterway and ten minutes from the Gulf of Mexico — if we’d had a boat, or a few more days, we would have made use of both. Something to come back for.
Sunsets Over the Lake

Each evening the lake fountain caught the last light and turned the whole surface gold. It was a genuinely pleasant way to end the day — coffee or a glass of wine on the pad, Jake making his rounds of the site perimeter, and a sky that knew how to close out a February evening in Alabama.
Jesse’s Restaurant, Magnolia Springs

Everyone at the resort pointed us toward Jesse’s Restaurant in Magnolia Springs, so we went for a late lunch and understood immediately why. The mushroom risotto was outstanding — the kind of dish that makes you stop mid-conversation. Everything arrived with good wine and in a relaxed, unhurried atmosphere. Jesse’s is about 20 minutes north of Gulf Shores in the tiny town of Magnolia Springs, which turned out to be worth the drive on its own.
Magnolia Springs Historic District

After lunch we drove slowly through the Magnolia Springs historic district — old live oaks overhanging the roads, beautifully restored homes set back on wide lots, and azaleas already blooming in February. Coming from the West Coast and the desert, there’s always something slightly startling about the Deep South in late winter: it looks like spring before spring has any business arriving. The flowers were vivid, the light was soft, and the town felt like it had been kept carefully rather than just preserved.

Practical Tips
Bella Terra is Class A only — confirm your rig qualifies before booking. It runs at a premium compared to state parks, but if you need a mail stop, a rest day, or just a few nights with full amenities and a pool, it delivers. Jesse’s Restaurant in Magnolia Springs is worth the 20-minute drive from the resort — go for lunch, order the risotto, and spend an hour walking the historic district afterward. The azaleas in late February are a genuine surprise if you’ve been traveling through the winter South and haven’t seen them yet.
