Greenwood, South Carolina: Visiting Family, a Lakeside Motorcoach Resort & Sandy’s Complete Anti-Mosquito Arsenal

From Savannah, Georgia we headed north to Greenwood, South Carolina to visit Sandy’s brother Eddie. Greenwood sits in the Piedmont region of the state, covers about 16 square miles, and has a population of around 23,000. It has everything you’d need — including, we noted, two Walmart stores, which is the modern benchmark for civilizational completeness. The area is genuinely beautiful, and it’s easy to understand why Eddie has lived here for years.

On the way in we stopped for diesel fuel. Even a gas station stop can be entertaining when you’re pulling a rig and half the lot turns to watch.

Lake Greenwood Motorcoach Resort

We stayed at Lake Greenwood Motorcoach Resort in Cross Hill, South Carolina, and it was one of the best campgrounds of our entire winter. Our site overlooked Lake Greenwood directly — stunning views at every hour of the day. The resort has a cozy clubhouse with a spacious lounge, fireplace, and television, an outdoor kitchen and entertainment area, a heated pool and spa, and wifi good enough to stream Netflix without interruption. The RV site itself was huge, private, concrete, and completely quiet. Cost was about the same as a KOA. Hardly anyone else was there. After some of the campgrounds we’d been through, this felt like an upgrade in every possible way.

Lake Greenwood is a reservoir on the Saluda River, covering 11,000 acres. It’s a popular fishing lake, and Jake took full advantage — he spent a good portion of our stay doing laps on the docks, investigating every slip with great thoroughness.

Visiting Eddie

We caught up with Eddie over lunch at New York Pizza & Pasta in Greenwood. Excellent pizza, and the Greek-style spinach stromboli was outstanding — the portion was enormous, and it lasted for days. Our server was a complete character. Eddie’s sense of humor and easy personality made the whole visit feel effortless.

Eddie has a beautiful, peaceful view from his home — the kind of quiet, green South Carolina scenery that makes you understand immediately why someone would settle here and stay.

We spent an evening outside at sunset, which in South Carolina in April requires a certain level of preparation. Sandy arrived fully equipped: long pants, long sleeves, socks, a citronella candle, Executioner mosquito swatter, Thermacell, and Off spray. No Zika on this stay.

Visitor Information

Lake Greenwood Motorcoach Resort is located at 1489 Clearwater Road, Cross Hill, SC 29332 — about 15 miles from downtown Greenwood. It is a Class A motorcoach resort with full hookup concrete pads, lakefront sites, a heated pool and spa, clubhouse, and outdoor entertainment area. Greenwood itself is located on US-25 and US-178, roughly 75 miles southwest of Columbia, SC. New York Pizza & Pasta is in downtown Greenwood. Lake Greenwood State Recreation Area, just south of Cross Hill, offers additional public lake access, boat ramps, and picnic facilities.

Practical Tips

Lake Greenwood Motorcoach Resort is one of those finds that doesn’t get talked about enough — the combination of lakefront sites, quality facilities, and relative quiet puts it well above most KOAs at a similar price point. Book ahead if you’re visiting in spring or fall, as the sites fill up. If you’re fishing, Lake Greenwood has a healthy population of largemouth bass, catfish, and crappie. For dinner, New York Pizza & Pasta is worth the stop — order the stromboli and plan for leftovers. Spring and early summer in South Carolina means mosquitoes after dark; Sandy’s approach (full coverage plus Thermacell) is genuinely the correct strategy.
