Traveling Huntleys

Escondido, California, North County San Diego

July 25, 2020 by Michael

Escondido is about 30 miles north of San Diego and one of San Diego counties oldest cities. Being about 15 miles inland from the ocean, its climate is a little bit warmer than the coast, but still considered a Mediterranian climate.

Its rugged hillsides and climate allow for the cultivation of avocados and oranges. Overall, its sunnier and has less marine layer compared to living on the coast. The terms May-gray and June-gloom were all too familiar when we lived near the ocean, but not in Escondido.

Daley Ranch has over 25 miles of hiking trails on over 3,000 acres of ranch land.

There are a couple of small ponds, historic buildings and dog friendly trails.

It was used as a horse ranch, cattle ranch, and later as a dairy/creamery. The family moved on and the city of Escondido purchased it in 1996.

They had full service and decent wifi, if you purchase the upgrade package. Satellite reception was good despite trees and a hillside. We stayed here in the past, and were put off by the highway noise. This time we got a site furthest away from the highway, and the noise was tolerable.

Escondido RV Resort portrays itself as a luxury resort and the prices reflect that. It’s not our idea of luxury. The highway noise is always present. Most sites are tight and overflowing with cars. Many of the residents are long term with too much clutter. Land is expensive in San Diego and therefore there aren’t many places for Rvers. They do have a huge dog park and are adjacent to a nice walking park.

Never the less, there are few options in the area, so beggars can’t be choosers. The RV park is near our house in San Diego and also near Michael’s father Jim. We needed RV repairs and the RV park is near Holland RV. They fixed our battery wiring problem, but the rest of the repairs were delayed waiting for parts.

The Resort is not gated. There were a lot of homeless in the area, but we had no problems both times we stayed here even though the resort cautions about theft.

Their landscaping was mature. We enjoyed walking each day and seeing the variety of plants and blooms.

The Rod McLeod Park was a nice outdoor setting for walks. Even though not many people visited the park because of the COVID-19 restrictions, there were a number of shoes and flip flops left behind by the day visitors. How do you leave without your shoes?? Anyway, it’s nice to be back in San Diego.
