Traveling Huntleys

Hanna Park, Jacksonville, Florida

March 18, 2022 by Michael

Hanna Park consists of 447 acres of mature coastal hammock. It is located in the Jacksonville Beaches area in Mayport, northeast Florida. It’s also known as Kathryn Abbey Hanna Park. The Park was established in 1967 and the area was purchased by the city of Jacksonville in 1970.

There is a large lake on the property that was formed from a large borrow pit during its initial development. There is a water park for when the temperatures are warmer. Hanna Park has extensive trails for hiking and biking. The biking trails are highly rated and popular on the weekends.

The beach was a short walk away and dog friendly.

We had full service but no WIFI or cable. There were quite a few over the air TV channels. Thank goodness for our cellular modem. Our site was very private. There wasn’t anyone next to us, so it was quiet and relatively campfire smoke free.

Each day we would take a couple of long walks either around the property through the canopy lined roads or to the ocean. All this for $30/night. From White Springs, it was only about a 1.5 hour drive to Hanna Park.

It’s early spring. Some flowers were just starting to bloom. There were a number of osprey in the area.

At the beach parking lot there was this old travel trailer. It’s spare tire had seen better days.

Mayport is on the A1A and is a fishing village next to Naval Station Mayport. There is a ferry that you can take across the St. John’s River to Fort St. George, but we decided to have lunch at Safe Harbor instead of going to the fort. Local Mayport steam shrimp were delicious. We ate an entire pound.

This Bald Eagle didn’t mind us stopping for a photo.

Located in Big Talbot Island State Park is Boneyard Beach. Erosion causes these massive trees to fall onto the beach where the sun, wind, and water bleaches and smooths the trees into driftwood bones. The driftwood helps protect against against the storms further erosion, so they serve to help the remaining trees.

Ops Pizza Kitchen in Fernandina Beach had a dog friendly, lush patio with numerous parakeets in a large bird cage that kept Jake entertained the entire time.

The area is a resort beach town and reminds us of Pacific Beach just north of San Diego, California. Except, the parking is free here. We had lunch at Engine 15 Brewery. Their tangerine wheat and IPA beers were outstanding along with their chili and BLT sandwich.

Big Dipper, Ocean Beach, Florida

We had a couple of clear nights. The Milky way wasn’t visible over the ocean, but the Big Dipper was.
