This strategic location has shaped its past as a significant trade and shipping hub, particularly for the Inn River salt trade in medieval times. With origins dating back to the 10th century, Rothenburg was elevated to the status of a Free Imperial City in 1274, becoming one of the most important city-states of the Middle Ages. From Würzburg, the route took us from wine to beer, a transition of the vineyard-covered slopes around Würzburg toward Bavaria’s famous beer-brewing center, Bamberg.
