Ohio & New York on our way to Vermont

October 7, 2019 by Michael Huntley

Ohio was our first stop after enjoying some of Michigan’s natural beauty. We found an RV park near the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, which is located between Cleveland and Akron Ohio.

Catskill & Lake George, New York: Cat Sculptures, a Boat Cruise & Adirondack Wine

Catskill, New York turned out to be one of our better work-and-rest stops of the summer. Juniper Woods Campground put us within easy reach of both Lake George and a quirky small-town Main Street where dozens of painted fiberglass cats stand guard year-round. Good internet, a hot tub for sore muscles, and friendly neighbors around the pool — exactly what we needed mid-trip.

Lake Placid, New York: Olympic Ski Jumping, Whiteface Mountain & Mirror Lake

Lake Placid is a beautiful mountain town no matter what the season. Tucked into the Adirondacks of upstate New York, it’s best known for hosting the Winter Olympics twice — in 1932 and 1980 — and the legacy of those games is visible everywhere you look, from the speed skating oval to the bobsled run to the ski jump towers that still dominate the skyline. We happened to be here in early June, and between the lupine blooming along every roadside and the summer training programs in full swing at the Olympic facilities, the timing couldn’t have been better.

Newburgh, New York: Orange County Choppers, America’s Oldest Winery & How Prohibition Changed American Taste

We were on our way to Vermont and stopped in Newburgh, New York for a few days. We didn’t expect much from the area — and then we ended up at the oldest winery in America, a legendary custom motorcycle shop, and a second winery that turned out to be growing their own grapes and doing very well. Not a bad detour.
