Paso Robles is a beautiful wine region of rolling hills draped in grapevines and ancient oak trees, situated midway along the California coast between Los Angeles and San Francisco. It had been our go-to destination for long weekend getaways when we lived in San Diego. From Temecula it was a five-hour drive north — and absolutely worth every mile.

Paso Robles Wine Country
Visitor Information: Paso Robles Wine Country is located along US-101 in San Luis Obispo County, approximately 200 miles north of Los Angeles and 230 miles south of San Francisco. The Paso Robles AVA has over 200 wineries. Tasting fees: Typically $20–30 per person. Most wineries open daily 10 AM–5 PM. Website: pasowine.com.

Paso Robles sits at around 1,000 feet elevation and enjoys a classic wine country climate — hot summers, cool winters, and significant day-to-night temperature swings that are ideal for developing complex, flavorful grapes. The east side of Highway 101 is broader and flatter, with sweeping miles of vineyards. The west side is where the magic is: oak-canopied back roads, hilly patches of vines, and the kind of picturesque California wine country scenery that stops you mid-drive just to look.

The area’s history is older than most realize. The Spanish missionaries established Mission San Miguel here and planted grape vines — laying the foundations for what would become one of California’s most significant wine regions. Cattle ranches, almond orchards, and natural hot springs defined Paso Robles through the 1800s, but commercial winemaking began in 1882. The Paso Robles AVA received its official designation in 1983. Today, with over 200 wineries, it has moved well beyond its reputation as a hidden gem and firmly into the conversation as a top-tier California wine destination.

The nicest RV resort we had stayed at to that point — and it had just opened that year. Cava Robles RV Resort sits amid the vineyards with two pools, three hot tubs, a splash pad, walking trails, fire pits, a fitness center, a wine tasting room, and a bistro and bar on-site. We had numerous winter storms during our stay, but the consolation was spectacular: almost daily rainbows over the hills.

Our site was enormous, private, and beautifully positioned with views of the surrounding hills. The spacing between sites gives Cava Robles a feeling more like a boutique resort than a typical RV park.

Jake was in paradise — three separate dog parks meant variety in his daily runs, and he made the most of every one of them.

Between the dog parks, Jake found another obsession: the ground squirrels that populated the property. He never caught one, but it wasn’t for lack of effort.

Birdwatching from the resort was a pleasant bonus — Acorn Woodpeckers in the oaks and Turkey Vultures riding thermals over the vineyards were daily visitors.
Wine Tasting

With over 200 wineries in the Paso Robles AVA, a month-long stay barely scratches the surface. We focused on a handful of favorites rather than trying to cover everything — a strategy that made for far more enjoyable tastings and real conversations with the people behind the wines.

Our favorites tend to be the smaller boutique wineries where the owners pour and love to talk about their wine. Steinbeck Vineyards is a perfect example — a family operation that has earned serious recognition without losing any of its personal warmth.

The trophy and ribbon wall at Steinbeck tells the story well — these small producers are winning competitions against much larger operations.

There are so many good wineries that should satisfy every palate. Our consistent favorites are Jack Creek, Nadeau, Red Soles, Tobin James, Opolo, and Turley.

Chronic Cellars is worth a visit for the art alone. Their distinctive, whimsical label artwork has earned them a cult following, and their commercial success has made their wines available at Costco — a rare achievement for a Paso Robles boutique producer.
Food Scene

The restaurant scene in Paso Robles punches well above its size. We love Thomas Hill Organics for its farm-to-table approach and reliably excellent cooking. Firestone Walker Brewing Company — the craft beer giant headquartered here — runs an outstanding kitchen alongside its beer program. Their shrimp and flatbread dishes were standout meals during our stay.

And for a quick dose of nostalgia, Paso Robles still sports a retro McDonald’s golden arch from a much earlier era — a charming piece of mid-century roadside Americana that stopped us in our tracks.
Super Blood Wolf Moon

January 2019 delivered a rare astronomical spectacle: the Super Blood Wolf Moon — a total lunar eclipse combining three phenomena at once. “Super” because the moon was at its closest point to earth, appearing larger and brighter than usual. “Wolf” for the traditional name of the first full moon of January. “Blood” for the deep red color cast on the moon as it passes through the earth’s shadow. The skies were mostly cloudy during our stay, but the full moon broke dramatically through the clouds during the eclipse for a memorable few minutes of photography.
Practical Tips
Book Cava Robles RV Resort well in advance. This resort-style park is exceptionally popular in spring and fall wine season. The large, private sites book up fast — especially on weekends. Reserve as early as possible.
Focus on the west side of Highway 101. The west side roads offer the most scenic driving and are home to many of the region’s best boutique wineries. Plan a slow, winding drive rather than rushing between stops.
One winery per afternoon, not five. The temptation is to pack tastings in, but the best Paso experiences happen when you slow down. Most boutique wineries are run by the owners and will give you far more time and insight if you linger.
Winter visits have real rewards. Paso Robles in winter means fewer crowds, quieter wineries, greener hills, and — as we discovered — spectacular rainbows. Some wineries have reduced hours, so check ahead, but the experience is more intimate than peak season.
Don’t skip the food scene. Thomas Hill Organics and Firestone Walker Brewing Company are both excellent. Downtown Paso Robles has a thriving restaurant and craft beverage scene that deserves at least one dedicated evening.
