Leaving San Diego: 25 Years, 7 Homes & the Start of Our Full-Time RV Life

January 9, 2017 by Michael Huntley

Last Updated: May 2026

Twenty-five years. Seven homes spread across San Diego County — downtown, the beach, a golf course community, and finally rural Rancho Santa Fe, where we grew Zinfandel grapes and made wine in the backyard for a decade. We loved all of it. And in January 2017, we sold or gave away almost everything we owned, staged the house, and drove east toward Florida to start a life we’d been thinking about for years. This is where the blog really begins.

Sioux Falls, South Dakota: Establishing Our RV Domicile & a City Worth Discovering

November 18, 2016 by Michael Huntley

Sioux Falls was our first real stop as full-time RVers — not for the sightseeing, but for the paperwork. We needed to establish a domicile state before we could leave California behind, and after researching the options, South Dakota made the most sense. What we didn’t expect was how much we’d enjoy the city itself. We arrived in mid-November 2016, a few days before the first snow of the season, and left genuinely impressed.

Cape Town, South Africa: Cape Point, Boulders Beach & the Cape Winelands

Cape Town was our base for the entire Africa trip — we flew in through Johannesburg, used the city as our hub between the safari legs, and flew home from here. It is one of the most beautiful cities we have ever visited. The setting alone is extraordinary: Table Mountain rising over the city, the Atlantic on one side and False Bay on the other, and miles of dramatic coastline stretching in both directions.

Stellenbosch, South Africa: Wine Tasting in the Cape Winelands

October 11, 2016 by Michael Huntley

After Botswana we flew back to Cape Town and drove east into the Cape Winelands. Stellenbosch sits about 30 miles from Cape Town in a valley framed by mountains — a Dutch colonial town settled in 1679 with a Mediterranean climate of hot dry summers and mild wet winters that makes it one of the great wine-growing regions in the world. We spent two days here exploring the estates before flying home, and it was the perfect decompression after the intensity of the safari.

Lion Sands Narina Lodge, Kruger National Park: Safari in South Africa’s Sabi Sand

After 30-plus hours of travel — California to London to Johannesburg to the bush airstrip at Skukuza — we made the short drive through the South African bush and arrived at Lion Sands Narina Lodge in Kruger National Park. We sat down for lunch and watched an elephant walk by. After all those hours in the air, it was the perfect welcome to Africa.

Linyanti Bush Camp, Botswana: Safari in the Chobe Wilderness

October 4, 2016 by Michael Huntley

We flew from Cape Town to Johannesburg to Maun, Botswana, then boarded a small bush plane for the final leg to the dirt landing strip at Linyanti Bush Camp, near Chobe National Park in northern Botswana. As we taxied to a stop, a lion was watching from the edge of the strip. It was the beginning of one of the most memorable experiences of our lives.
