Portland to Kennebunkport: Old Orchard Beach, St. Ann’s Church & the End of Maine Season

This was our last campground in Maine before turning north toward New Hampshire and Vermont for the fall foliage. We had two things on the agenda: a visit to the Apple Store in Portland (our iMac’s video card had failed, followed immediately by the hard drive — a clear sign it was time for retirement), and a few days exploring the southern Maine coast. Apple takes the recycling seriously: they ship the old hardware back to California where it gets broken down into components for new products. A dignified end for a machine that had served us well on the road. With that errand sorted, we had the coastline to ourselves as the season wound down.

Boothbay Harbor, Maine: Chowder House, East Boothbay & Ocean Point Walk

On our way south to Portland, we made a deliberate detour into Boothbay Harbor, Maine. The town’s reputation for scenic coves, waterfront restaurants, and walkable streets had been on our radar, and it delivered exactly what we hoped for — plus a foggy side trip to East Boothbay that turned out to be one of the more atmospheric drives of the whole summer.

Belfast, Maine: Moorings Oceanfront RV Resort, Young’s Lobster Pound & Cellardoor Winery

Traveling south from Acadia, we pulled into Belfast, Maine for a few days — and the primary reason was simple: the view from our motorhome was of the ocean. What followed turned out to be one of the more enjoyable stops of the whole 2017 summer trip. Belfast is a small city that has continually reinvented itself over three centuries, and it wears that history well — in its architecture, its waterfront, and its remarkably good food scene.

Acadia National Park: Schoodic Peninsula, Cadillac Mountain & Campfire Lobster

We timed our visit to Acadia National Park deliberately. By waiting until after Labor Day, we traded peak-season crowds for cooler air, changing foliage, and the kind of unhurried pace that lets you actually absorb a place. Between two very different campgrounds — one perched close to the wild, uncrowded Schoodic Peninsula and the other deep in the Southwest Harbor woods — we spent a full week exploring granite headlands, tidal pools, carriage roads, and the sweeping panoramic views from Cadillac Mountain.

Lubec Maine: Roosevelt Campobello, West Quoddy Head & Downeast Boat Tours

Lubec, Maine holds a distinction that sets it apart from every other town in the contiguous United States: it is the easternmost incorporated municipality in the country. Perched on a narrow peninsula where Cobscook Bay meets Passamaquoddy Bay, Lubec feels like the edge of the world — and in the best possible way. During our 2017 summer road trip through New England and Atlantic Canada, we crossed the short international bridge from Campobello Island, New Brunswick, and spent several unforgettable days soaking in the history, wildlife, and extraordinary light of this remote corner of Maine.
