Glacier National Park, Northern Montana

From Missoula, Montana we headed north to Glacier National Park. The rugged, snow-capped mountains straddling the Continental Divide were breathtaking. The drive from Missoula was scenic throughout, especially along the western shore of Flathead Lake. We stocked up in Kalispell — it has a Costco — though we had to be strategic, as fresh vegetables, fruits, meat, dairy, poultry, and alcohol are restricted when crossing into Canada.

From Gardiner, Montana at the north entrance of Yellowstone we made our way toward Glacier National Park. Along the way, we stopped in Livingston, Bozeman, and Missoula — and were treated to one of the most vivid double rainbows over the Yellowstone River we have ever seen.

North Yellowstone & Gardiner, Montana

We spent a full week in Gardiner, Montana, at the north entrance to Yellowstone National Park. It was the perfect base — a short drive to the entrance gate, and each morning we were greeted by elk and pronghorn antelope right along the road. We explored the park on multiple days, covering the Lamar Valley, Mammoth Hot Springs, Norris Geyser Basin, the Madison River corridor, and more thermal features than we could fit into one visit.

From Cody, Wyoming we looped back through the beautiful Bighorn Mountains to explore Story and Sheridan, Wyoming before heading north into Montana to visit the Little Bighorn Battlefield. The drive through the Bighorns was stunning in every direction, and each stop along the way added another layer to the history of this part of the American West.

Buffalo Bill, Cody & Yellowstone, Wyoming

From the Bighorn Mountains, we headed west to Cody, Wyoming — the eastern gateway to Yellowstone and one of the most historically rich small towns in the American West. It rained for much of our stay, but that didn’t slow us down. We spent a half-day at the extraordinary Buffalo Bill Center of the West, made a full day trip into Yellowstone through the dramatic east entrance, and enjoyed every bite of the local homemade food.
