Waterfalls

Waterfalls, Glacier National Park, Part 2

August 26, 2022 by Michael Huntley

Waterfalls seem to be more numerous than glaciers in Glacier National Park in early summer. They are everywhere. Many of them are along the roads, and many more require a scenic hike to get to. Most of the ones we hiked to were when we stayed on the St. Mary’s side of Glacier National Park.

West Glacier & Trout Creek, Montana

We thoroughly enjoyed exploring British Columbia and Alberta over the past two months. Back in the USA at West Glacier, Montana — the border crossing was quick, easy, and uneventful. The storage locker we rented in the US worked out well despite the stories other RVers had warned us about regarding theft; we chose one that was gated, fenced, and under 24-hour surveillance. After watching a couple of seasons of NatGeo border crossing documentaries, we left our firearms, ammunition, exceptional bottles of single malt whisky, and medications beyond the six-week supply limit in the USA rather than chance any complications at the crossing.

Yoho National Park & Fairmont Hot Springs, British Columbia, Canada

From Revelstoke we headed east to Golden, BC, positioned between Yoho National Park and the Columbia Mountains. The fires that had followed us since Kelowna persisted — we could see smoke rising from burning trees on the surrounding mountainsides. Yoho, Banff, Kootenay, and Jasper National Parks all share borders; the only highway closed by fire was the one through Kootenay, which we had already driven.

Mount Revelstoke & Glacier National Parks, British Columbia, Canada

We left the vineyards of Kelowna and traveled northeast into the smoke-filled Columbia Mountains, bound for Mount Revelstoke and Glacier National Parks in British Columbia. There were over 566 wildfires burning across the province — a state of emergency had been declared, most fires sparked by lightning. Even though the smoke took away from the rugged beauty of the Columbia Mountains and severely limited our activities, we still found outstanding trails and waterfalls worth exploring.

From Jasper National Park in Alberta, we headed west over the mountains into British Columbia, making stops in Valemount and Clearwater before reaching our wine country destination of Kelowna in the Okanagan Valley.
