Lubec, Maine holds a distinction that sets it apart from every other town in the contiguous United States: it is the easternmost incorporated municipality in the country. Perched on a narrow peninsula where Cobscook Bay meets Passamaquoddy Bay, Lubec feels like the edge of the world — and in the best possible way. During our 2017 summer road trip through New England and Atlantic Canada, we crossed the short international bridge from Campobello Island, New Brunswick, and spent several unforgettable days soaking in the history, wildlife, and extraordinary light of this remote corner of Maine.

Fundy National Park & Hopewell Rocks, New Brunswick: Dickson Falls, Albino Lobster & Bay of Fundy Tides

On our way back to the United States from Nova Scotia, we made a deliberate detour into New Brunswick for a few nights at Fundy National Park — and it turned out to be one of the best decisions of the entire summer. A magical waterfall trail, a rare albino lobster, a bottle of Spanish red with fresh pasta and chanterelle mushrooms, and the most dramatic tidal formations on the planet. Not a bad send-off from Canada.

Nova Scotia: Peggy’s Cove, Halifax Maritime Museum & the Bay of Fundy at Spencer’s Island

Leaving Cape Breton we traveled south through New Glasgow and on to Peggy’s Cove — and from there worked our way along the southern and western shores of Nova Scotia through Halifax, Truro, and ultimately Spencer’s Island on the Bay of Fundy. This stretch delivered some of the trip’s most memorable experiences: a tidal bore raft ride, 36-foot tides, a ghost ship mystery, and the best seafood chowder of the summer.

Cape Breton Island turned out to be one of the most stunning and surprising stops of the entire summer. We arrived by ferry from PEI, drove the Celtic-flavoured southwestern shore, explored Alexander Graham Bell’s summer retreat in Baddeck, watched bald eagles pluck fish from the sea, hiked to a hidden 50-foot waterfall, and spent days on the Cabot Trail — a coastal road that belongs in the conversation with Big Sur for sheer scenic drama.

Prince Edward Island: Red Beaches, Bottle Houses & the Points East Coastal Drive

We crossed the Restigouche River from New Brunswick and made our way east, eventually arriving at the Confederation Bridge — the longest bridge over ice-covered water in the world, spanning 12.9 kilometres across the Northumberland Strait. In winter, when the Gulf of St. Lawrence freezes over, this is what connects Prince Edward Island to the mainland. It is thought to be the most Scottish place outside Scotland, with roughly 50% of the population claiming Scottish ancestry. The island has a pastoral, almost fairy-tale quality — rolling red-cliffed coastlines, potato fields in every direction, and an unhurried pace that makes it easy to stay longer than planned.

Crossing the Restigouche River from Québec into Campbellton marked our entry into New Brunswick — and the beginning of a slow, rewarding drive along one of Canada’s most underrated coastlines. From a UNESCO World Heritage fossil site to a personal ancestral stop, lobster traps stacked to the sky, and Celtic music echoing from a lighthouse, coastal New Brunswick delivered surprises at every turn.
