From Bryce Canyon we headed to Zion National Park in southwestern Utah. We stayed at Bauers Canyon RV Park in Glendale, about a 30-minute drive from the Zion entrance along the Mount Carmel Highway. Nights still dropped to freezing, so we were glad to have our heated water hose.

We were looking forward to returning to Bryce Canyon National Park for its collection of natural amphitheaters filled with orange, red, and white hoodoos. We had come less than an hour’s drive from Escalante, and nearby was Kodachrome Basin State Park.

From Capitol Reef we drove Utah’s Scenic Byway 12 to Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. The route was beautiful and very curvy, climbing high over Boulder Mountain — there was still snow on the ground at the upper elevations.

From Moab we traveled a few hours west to Capitol Reef National Park, Utah. We arrived in early May to a surprise: below-freezing nights and a dusting of late spring snow on the red rock.

Moab, Utah is the gateway city to Arches and Canyonlands National Parks. Thanks to its setting amid some of the most spectacular canyon country in the Southwest, Moab is famous for outdoor recreation of every kind — mountain biking, hiking, river rafting, motorcycling, ATV and Jeep trails, rock climbing, and canyoneering. We arrived in spring 2018 after exploring Monument Valley and Bluff, and quickly understood why Moab draws adventurers from all over the world.

Listed in 1,000 Places to See Before You Die, Bluff sits along the San Juan River at the doorstep of Bears Ears National Monument and puts you within easy reach of Valley of the Gods, Natural Bridges National Monument, Goosenecks State Park, ancient Anasazi cliff dwellings, and miles of open BLM rangeland. We arrived in our Newmar motorhome — and were immediately welcomed by the local open-range cattle who have no concept of traffic laws.
